Joseph House is a Catholic Retreat Center and House of Prayer. Built in 1905 as part of Ste. Marie Parish, it served originally as a residence for the Marist Brothers and later for the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary who taught in the adjacent school building.
The four story building has a private Eucharistic Chapel with an oratory that seats 30. The main living room can be used for meetings, prayers groups, and conferences. There is a small room used for private prayer time or spiritual direction. The main level has a full bath/shower. The kitchen, laundry room, dining room/living room and small bathroom are located in the lower level. Bedrooms are located on the 3rd and 4th floors and there are common showers on each of the three levels, and several rooms have their own sinks. There are 3 private and 9 semi-private bedrooms. All linens and bath towels are provided.
There is a small courtyard in the back of the house surrounded by a large fence for private prayer time. There is parking on the street for most of the season with the exception of winter; a permit is required to park in Ste. Marie’s parking lot.
In 1985, Fr. Marc Montminy, then the associate pastor of Ste. Marie, opened Joseph House in the former convent of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary under the direction Sister Mary Anne Laughlin SND. They transformed Joseph House into a charming retreat center and house of contemplative prayer, with space for 18 overnight guests. From 1986 until 2008 Sister Mary Anne served as director. Sister Mary Anne’s motto was:
“ Hospes Venit + Christos Venit” (When a guest enters + Christ enters)
